I'd like to change the spell icons for the default UI to the more modern ones used on the class pages for the Al'Kabor wiki, such as this: https://wiki.takp.info/index.php/Paladin Is it possible to do, and how much of a headache would it be if it is?
I don't remember how to swap them but look in TAKP>ui files>poweroftwo>optional files for the spell icons e: Same files names in the main poweroftwo directory, try sticking them in there.
I did it the other way around... using duxa, i wanted the default spell icons. Just had to replace the gemicons01.tga .. gemicons03.tga and spells01.tga ... spells07.tga. No need to edit UI files. So, you could drop in those files with more modern icons from any UI / any source that uses the "default" layout. (Some of the UIs do, others don't.) Might also try dropping in those files from a live install. Would be very modern (not sure if it's the set you would like to have). They still provide a "classic_spell_icons" directory with exactly those files as a replacement, so I guess files and layout are still compatible.
