Don't need a key forever, just one door open once and a throwaway rogue/necro. And tbh - they probably did - a little shakerpaging put a rogue on an underused account and you were in. Its not any different than having a cothbot in vt (you aint using that thing again) and the rogue takes far less time and effort than keying a mage for VT. To get SoS you are already guaranteed torment access; and the key while a troubling event; wasn't insurpassable - people just didn't do it. Plain and simple.
